Welcome to Music at Holy Redeemer!
"Without music life would be a mistake." ~Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche
Holy Redeemer is proud of its long history of music education. General music is taught to every student in grades K-8 by Ms. Anna Song. Kindergarten and grades 1-3rd meets twice per week. Fourth grade music is structured so that all fourth graders will learn how to play the violin in String Ensemble twice a week in addition to weekly class which will focus on general music. The older grades, 5-8th, have music once a week.
General music classes are geared toward music theory, music appreciation, vocal technique, music history, developing listening skills and playing instruments. Movement and dance is also incorporated to foster physical awareness, coordination and pulse. Students experience music through singing, dancing, games, activities, and improvising on instruments before learning rhythm and note reading skills.
In addition to their regular general music classes, all students have the opportunity for private music lessons, to become members of the choir, or the orchestra. Holy Redeemer offers lessons in piano, cello, violin, or viola. Students in grades seven and eight may also take private voice lessons. Students who have had at least two years of private music lessons are invited to participate in orchestra.
Ms. Anna Song has been directing choirs and teaching music in the Portland area since moving to Oregon in 2001. After graduating with a B.A. in composition from UCLA, she went on to finish her M.M. in conducting from the School of Music and the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University. Her past teaching positions include DePaul University in Chicago and St. Cecilia School in Beaverton. She has also served as the Assistant Conductor of the Portland Symphonic Chorus. Currently, Ms. Song is the director of the St. Rose Children’s Choir in NE Portland, co-founder and artistic director of In Mulieribus, an early music women’s vocal ensemble, and Director of Choirs at Linfield College. She is very excited to be joining the faculty of Holy Redeemer and looks forward to meeting the students and having a great first year. She lives in North Portland with her husband Blake Applegate and their two children, Grace and James.
