On April 2, 2007, the Altar Society celebrated its 99th birthday. It is the oldest organization with continuous service in Holy Redeemer Parish. In its origin it was called the Sanctuary Society, but with time it became known as the Altar Society, a term more commonly used in the Church for such an organization.
The Altar Society is governed by a Constitution and By-Laws. In 1999, membership was changed from women only to any person of Holy Redeemer Parish who has an interest in helping to meet the needs for which the Altar Society exists. Dues are $5 a year and constitute a portions of the annual income. Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 1 pm in Clare Hall. After each meeting, refreshments are served and the time is given for members and visitors to socialize.
The Altar Society is responsible to supply all of the liturgical needs for the church. These include candles, wines, altar linens, altar breads, priests' vestments, servers' robes, fresh flowers and plants for the altars, and , on occasion, funds for other projects that improve or enhance the worship space. The main fundraisers include the annual Fall Bazaar, the Valentine Luncheon in the Spring, the No-Bake Sale on Palm Sunday, and funeral and wedding receptions as requested.
As is true of all viable organizations, new members are needed to continue the work that started in 1908. It is a unique group that supplies the Church with those needs for the meaningful Liturgies for which Holy Redeemer is known. God is never outdone in generosity and for the time, energy and monetary resources expended by the members of the Altar Society, a rich gratification is realized. Consider being a part of the Altar Society as an active member.
